Button repairs & replacement

A loose or missing button is a small thing that can stop you wearing a favourite shirt, coat or jacket. We’ll sew it back, replace it or move it for a better fit.

What we can do

Loose or missing buttons

We’ll sew buttons back on securely and repair the fabric around them if it’s torn. Bring the spare button if you have one, so it matches the rest.

Moving or adding buttons

Moving a button can improve how a garment closes or fits. We’ll check it lines up with the buttonhole and the overlap before we sew.

Decorative and vintage details

Want to replace a whole set or try something more decorative? Bring the buttons you love. We don’t make custom buttons or source vintage replicas.

Removing buttons

Taking off a button can leave stitch marks or fading. We’ll show you how it’s likely to look and whether the buttonhole needs closing.

How much does it cost?

The number and type of buttons, any damaged fabric and buttonhole work all affect the price.

Button prices depend on how many buttons, whether you supply them, any buttonholes and damaged fabric. We’ll confirm the full price before we start.

Bring it in and we’ll take a look, talk you through the work and confirm your price before you leave it with us. If you have matching fabric, buttons or measurements, bring those too.

The right button for the job

Loose, missing and moved buttons

Bring the garment and any loose or spare buttons, so we can match them and see how they’re attached. Tightening a button, sewing on a new one and moving one for a better fit are different jobs. We check the fabric around it too, because if it’s torn or worn thin, it needs a repair before the button will hold.

Decorative, vintage and working buttons

Buttons are part of a garment’s personality as well as its fastening. Tell us whether an exact match matters, or whether you’d be happy with a new set. For decorative, covered or unusual buttons, bring any you’d like us to use. Adding a button may also need a new buttonhole, so it isn’t always just a few stitches.

Your questions

Can you find an exact match?

Bring a spare or replacement button if you have one. We don’t make custom buttons or source vintage replicas, so an exact match isn’t always possible.

Can you remove buttons or adjust buttonholes?

Yes. We can remove buttons you don’t want and close the buttonholes, or adjust buttonholes to suit buttons in a new spot. We’ll tell you first if marks from the old position might show.

Do I need to bring the button?

Bring any spare that came with the garment. No spare? Have a chat with us about size, colour and style. An exact match isn’t always possible, especially on older pieces.

Is each button charged separately?

We’ll confirm how many buttons, the work on each and your full price. Supplied buttons, new buttons, reinforcement and fabric repairs can each cost differently.

Can moving a button make clothes fit better?

It can help with a small adjustment, as long as the fastening still sits and works properly. We’ll check the overlap and buttonhole before suggesting a new spot.

How long will the work take, and is express available?

Most simple jobs are ready in 3–5 days, and more complex work in 1–2 weeks. In a rush? Express options are available for an extra fee. Just tell us your deadline. Express rates are 30% for same-day, 20% for next-day and 10% for two-day work, or 40% for same-day and 30% for next-day on Saturdays. Express depends on how busy we are, so we’ll confirm it and your pickup time before we start.
