Brunswick West & Collingwood / Fitzroy

Pants & jeans alterations

Too long, too loose or too wide? Bring your trousers or jeans to Brunswick West or Collingwood and we’ll get them fitting just the way you like.

What we can do

Hemming and length

Shorten casual pants or formal trousers, add or remove cuffs, or keep the original hem on your jeans. Too short? We’ll check how much fabric is tucked inside the hem to see if we can let them down.

Waist, seat and leg shape

A gap at the back of the waist, a baggy seat or a leg that’s too wide can all be fixed. We can take in or let out the waist, adjust the seat and thighs, or taper the leg for a sleeker line. How much we can let out depends on the seam allowance.

Denim repairs

Worn knees, a thinning crotch, split seams, broken zips and holey pockets: we can give your favourite jeans a second life, and we’ll tell you upfront whether the repair will show.

Formal trousers

Bring the shoes you’ll wear so we can get the break just right. We can also add cuffs or a finishing detail to suit your outfit.

Creases and decorative hems

Want a sharp crease on your formal trousers? We can create one. Suit trousers can also have a decorative hem finish, such as a subtle stitch detail or trim.

How much does it cost?

The hem finish, denim thickness, waistband construction and any repairs all affect the price.

Getting the fit right

Regular, blind or original hems

A regular hem, a discreet blind hem and an original jeans hem all give a different look. Tell us whether you want visible stitching, a turn-up or the worn edge of your denim kept, and we’ll pin the length on you. On tapered legs the hem gets narrower as it goes up, so we’ll let you know if an original hem won’t sit well.

Look at the whole fit

A loose waist, a baggy seat and a wide leg are separate fixes, so we look at how your pants sit before deciding what to change. Bring a belt if you usually wear one, and check how they feel sitting down as well as standing. For formal trousers, your shoes help us judge the break and length.

Your questions

Can you keep the original jeans hem?

Usually, yes! We’ll check the denim, the leg shape and how much needs to come off, then let you know if an original hem is the best finish.

Can tight trousers be let out?

Often, if there’s enough fabric in the seams. Bring them in before you give up on them. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Can you repair worn jeans as well as shorten them?

Absolutely. Bring them in and we’ll look at the knees, seat, crotch or anywhere else that’s wearing thin. A patch can strengthen the repair, and we’ll show you how it’s likely to look first.

Can cuffs be added or removed?

Yes. Adding a turn-up needs enough length, and removing one can reveal a worn or faded fold, so we’ll check the fabric and help you choose the best finished length.

Should I shorten trousers myself?

If you sew, a simple hem may be fine. But once it’s cut, it’s cut! If you’re unsure about the length, a blind hem, tapering or keeping an original jeans hem, bring them in uncut and leave it to us.

How long will the work take, and is express available?

Most simple jobs are ready in 3–5 days, and more complex work in 1–2 weeks. In a rush? Express options are available for an extra fee. Just tell us your deadline. Express rates are 30% for same-day, 20% for next-day and 10% for two-day work, or 40% for same-day and 30% for next-day on Saturdays. Express depends on how busy we are, so we’ll confirm it and your pickup time before we start.
