What we can do
Letting down existing hems
We’ll check pants, jeans, skirts and dresses for spare fabric inside the hem. The old fold line or wear can sometimes show once it’s let down.
Adding panels or borders
Extra fabric can add length to a skirt, dress or trouser hem. A matching or contrasting band changes the look, so we’ll agree on it with you first.
Sleeves and cuffs
Jacket and shirt sleeves can sometimes be lengthened using spare fabric or a new cuff. Buttons and lining affect the result.
Material availability
Some lengthening needs extra material. If you have spare matching fabric, bring it in.
Tops, suits and coat sleeves
Tops and blouses can be lengthened by adding fabric or letting down the hem. We can also look at suit trousers, jacket and coat sleeves, and evening or cocktail dresses.
How much does it cost?
The spare fabric, any added material, the lining and the finish you choose all affect the price.
The spare fabric, lining, old hem marks and any added panel all affect the price. We’ll look at your garment before giving you a lengthening price.
Bring it in and we’ll take a look, talk you through the work and confirm your price before you leave it with us. If you have matching fabric, buttons or measurements, bring those too.
Finding extra length
Hems, cuffs and sleeves
If there’s fabric tucked inside the hem or cuff, we can often let it down and still finish the edge nicely. The old fold, stitch marks or wear may show. A pair of trousers might have plenty to spare while a lined sleeve or dress has very little, so we check each part separately.
Panels, trims and design changes
Not much spare fabric? An added band, panel or other change might do the trick. We’ll talk about the fabric, colour, weight and look you want, so bring any matching fabric or a photo. For formal wear, think about your shoes and the rest of the outfit before we settle on the new length.
Your questions
Can you make jeans longer?
We can check for spare fabric in the hem or talk about an added finish. Fading at the old hem may still show.
Do I need to bring fabric?
Only if the job needs extra material. We’ll let you know what suits your garment and what’s available.
Can a shortened garment go back to its original length?
Only if there’s enough fabric left or we can add some. If the extra was cut off, it can’t simply be let down. Bring any fabric saved from the earlier alteration.
Will the old hem line show?
It might. Wear, fading, pressing and old stitching can leave a line when a hem is let down. We’ll look at the fabric and tell you before you decide.
Can you lengthen a child’s uniform?
Bring it in and we’ll check. Fabric kept inside the hem helps, but earlier cutting and wear can limit how much we can let down. Next time you shorten one, ask us to keep some length inside for growth.
How long will the work take, and is express available?
Most simple jobs are ready in 3–5 days, and more complex work in 1–2 weeks. In a rush? Express options are available for an extra fee. Just tell us your deadline. Express rates are 30% for same-day, 20% for next-day and 10% for two-day work, or 40% for same-day and 30% for next-day on Saturdays. Express depends on how busy we are, so we’ll confirm it and your pickup time before we start.
